Mentee Robotics, a startup founded in 2022 by renowned experts in AI, computer vision, and robotics, has emerged from stealth mode with a groundbreaking new humanoid robot prototype. Planned for production release in early 2025, this AI-driven robot represents a significant leap forward in the field of humanoid robotics.
The key differentiator of Mentee Robotics' approach is its focus on integrating AI across all operational layers of the robot, rather than treating it as an add-on. The company's founders, which include Prof. Amnon Shashua, the founder of Mobileye and AI21 Labs, have leveraged their deep expertise in areas like computer vision, natural language processing, and machine learning to create a truly "AI-first" humanoid robot.
At the core of the Menteebot prototype is the use of transformer-based large language models (LLMs) to interpret natural language commands and "think through" the required steps to complete complex tasks. This allows the robot to understand verbal instructions and plan the necessary actions, rather than relying on pre-programmed responses.
The robot's locomotion and dexterity are powered by a novel simulator-to-reality (Sim2Real) machine learning approach. This technique enables the robot to learn and refine its movements in a simulated environment before seamlessly transferring that knowledge to the real world. This ensures dynamic balance and precise hand movements, which are crucial for a wide range of household and industrial tasks.
Another key innovation is the robot's ability to build a real-time cognitive 3D map of its environment using NeRF-based algorithms. This allows the Menteebot to localize itself, plan dynamic paths to avoid obstacles, and precisely locate and interact with objects in its surroundings.
While the prototype showcased today is not the final production-ready version, it has already demonstrated an impressive end-to-end capability, from understanding verbal commands to completing complex tasks involving navigation, object manipulation, and natural language interaction.
The production-ready Menteebot, expected in early 2025, will feature camera-only sensing, proprietary electric motors for advanced dexterity, and fully integrated AI capabilities. This will enable the robot to handle a wide range of tasks in both household and industrial settings, with the ability to learn new skills through imitation and natural interaction.
"We are on the cusp of a convergence of computer vision, natural language understanding, strong and detailed simulators, and methodologies for transferring from simulation to the real world," said Prof. Amnon Shashua, chairman of Mentee Robotics. "At Mentee Robotics, we see this convergence as the starting point for designing the future general-purpose bipedal robot that can move everywhere as a human, with the brains to perform household tasks and learn through imitation."
Mentee Robotics' AI-driven humanoid robot represents a significant step forward in the field of robotics, blending cutting-edge AI technologies with advanced physical capabilities. As the company prepares to bring this innovative solution to market, it is poised to challenge the status quo and redefine the possibilities of humanoid robotics.
