Qinglong: China's Open-Source Humanoid Robot for a Global AI Ecosystem

China has unveiled Qinglong, its first full-sized general-purpose humanoid robot, at the 2024 World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC). Developed by the National Local Joint Humanoid Robot Innovation Center, Qinglong is designed to be an open-source platform for advancing the field of humanoid robotics globally.

Qinglong stands at 185 cm tall and weighs 80 kg, featuring a highly bionic torso and anthropomorphic motion control. With 43 active degrees of freedom, the robot is capable of a wide range of dexterous movements and tasks.
Qinglong can perform rapid walking, agile obstacle avoidance, and stable movement on inclines and declines, demonstrating its versatility. Its maximum joint peak torque of 400 N·m and computational power of 400 TOPs (Tera Operations Per Second) further contribute to its advanced capabilities.
The key focus of Qinglong is to serve as an open-source platform for AI development and foster a global ecosystem for humanoid robotics.

"We have released the full stack of technology related to humanoid robots to the public as open source," said Xu Bin, the general manager of the innovation center. This open-source initiative aims to encourage collaboration and innovation within the global robotics and AI communities.

As part of this effort, the National Local Joint Humanoid Robot Innovation Center has launched the OpenLoong open-source community website, which provides access to Qinglong's hardware structure, parameters, and embodied intelligence software packages. The center also plans to introduce a new humanoid robot model annually, each named after one of the Chinese zodiac animals, to further expand the open-source ecosystem.

"In the Year of the Dragon this year, we named our humanoid robot Qinglong [meaning green dragon in Chinese] and initiated an open-source community for humanoid robotics," said Jiang Lei, the chief scientist of the innovation center. "Through open-sourcing, our goal is to introduce a new humanoid robot model annually, each named after one of the Chinese zodiac animals, to foster a humanoid robot innovation community unique to China."

The unveiling of Qinglong at WAIC 2024 marks a significant milestone in China's efforts to drive advancements in humanoid robotics and establish a global leadership position in this field.

The conference, themed "Governing AI for Good and for All," aims to promote international cooperation, inclusiveness, and equal participation in the development of AI technologies.

Qinglong's open-source approach and the innovation center's plans to expand the ecosystem annually underscore China's ambition to create a collaborative environment for the global advancement of humanoid robotics. By leveraging its technological prowess and fostering an open-source community, China is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of this rapidly evolving field.
