The BMW Group has taken a significant step forward in the integration of humanoid robots into its manufacturing processes at the Spartanburg plant. In collaboration with California-based robotics company Figure, the automotive giant has successfully tested the latest generation of humanoid robots, Figure 02, in a real production environment.
During the trial run, which lasted several weeks, the Figure 02 robot demonstrated its ability to autonomously insert sheet metal parts into specific fixtures, which were then assembled as part of the vehicle chassis. This task requires a high degree of dexterity, showcasing the advanced capabilities of the humanoid robot.
Milan Nedeljković, Member of the Board of Management for Production at BMW AG, expressed enthusiasm for the potential of this technology, stating, "The developments in the field of robotics are very promising. With an early test operation, we are now determining possible applications for humanoid robots in production. We want to accompany this technology from development to industrialization."
The successful testing of the Figure 02 robot aligns with BMW's vision for the future of production, known as BMW iFACTORY. This vision emphasizes efficiency, digitalization, and sustainability, with the company continuously exploring new technologies to enhance its manufacturing processes.
During the trial run, BMW gained valuable insights into the requirements for integrating multi-purpose robots into their existing production system, including how humanoid robots communicate with the system under real-world conditions. Moving forward, BMW and Figure will collaborate to further develop the robots based on the findings from this initial test, preparing Figure 02 for future applications in automobile production.
The Figure 02 robot represents the latest advancements in robotics technology, boasting significant improvements over its predecessor. With enhanced processing power, voice communication, cameras, microphones, sensors, and human-scale hands with 16 degrees of freedom per hand, the Figure 02 is well-equipped to perform a wide range of complex tasks autonomously.
This successful test of humanoid robots at BMW Group Spartanburg marks a significant milestone in the automotive industry's embrace of advanced robotics technology.
